About the Sharon Woods Harbor Revitalization

THE BIGGER PICTURE

In 2019, Great Parks completed a Comprehensive Master Plan and Park & Facility Masterplans for all Great Parks with the goal of gathering community input and setting a vision for parks, facilities, programming and services through 2028 (Documents can be found here). Through this process, Great Parks set five primary goals:

  • Be a Recognized Leader in Conservation
  • Provide Innovative Programming as a Gateway to Nature Exploration
  • Create Outstanding Experiences
  • Advance Fiscal Health
  • Operate with High Standards of Excellence

As the programmatic heart of the one of the largest and most visited regional parks, the revitalization and reimagining of the Sharon Lake Harbor, including the boat house, playground area, snack bar and restroom amenities, is a key objective toward advancing these overall goals of the comprehensive master plan and better serving our community members.

As part of the masterplan process, Great Parks created a series of priorities to help guide improvements and project implementation. During the design process of Sharon Lake Harbor, Great Parks will be keeping these relevant implementation priorities at the forefront:

  • Add Programming and Events for Diverse Audiences
  • Focus on Partnerships
  • Build Ecological Resiliency
  • Expand Access for All Users

In addition to advancing the goals and priorities of the masterplan, the revitalization of the harbor will complement other ongoing projects at the park including the current dredging and associated improvements of Sharon Lake taking place in 2024-2025 (Sharon Lake Improvements Project Page). The dredging project will bring new nature opportunities to Sharon Lake such as additional fishing areas, boardwalks, and added wetland areas to observe wildlife, all of which the Harbor revitalization and design can further enhance.

Great Parks will continue to involve the community and park visitors by seeking input and feedback on how the revitalization of the Sharon Woods Harbor can best serve the needs of the community.

TIMELINE

After collecting the initial round of community input, we will begin working with the design team to develop initial concepts and ideas that will then be brought back to the community for additional feedback. During this process, we will also engage with local communities, stakeholders and interest groups for more specific feedback. Once we reach a final concept, the design will be further developed and documented for construction.
